During a new interview for GQ, Shawn Mendes opened up about how his girlfriend and fellow singer, Camila Cabello helped him gain more confidence after he’d put a lot of pressure on himself to look a certain way. Here’s what he had to say!
It appears that the Canadian artist has learned to worry much less about his physical appearance than he used to and it’s all thanks to his partner.
During the chat with the publication, Shawn admitted that he would sometimes sleep way less than he needed to just so that he could wake up early and squeeze in a workout.
In fact, he gave his physical appearance so much importance that he even believed that ‘if you don’t work out, you’re going to lose fans.’
However, seeing how his girlfriend responded to body criticism thrown at her has inspired Shawn to be much more relaxed when it comes to his own looks as well!
He gushed over her, saying that Camila is so ‘strong, so clear and confident with her [body] and so articulate and empathetic about other people’s, and it really changed my view of mine. It really changed my life.’
Mendes mentioned that he’s now learned that ‘taking that extra few hours of sleep, instead of waking up to pump iron, is a better choice sometimes.’
Sure enough, Camila has come a long way as well, especially since she has a history with body shamers!
Back in August of last year, she opened up about it in a candid message posted on her IG Stories.
‘Honestly first thing I felt was insecure just IMAGINING what these pictures must look like, oh no! My Cellulite! Oh no! I did not suck in my stomach! But then I was like…of course there’s bad pictures, of course there’s bad angles, my body is not made of f***ing rock, or all muscle, for that matter. But the saddest part of young girls growing up in an airbrushed world is that they are seeking a perfection that is not real,’ she said at the time.
